Industrial engineering studies how to understand and more efficiently and rationally operate systems in which people, resources, information, and technology are complexly interconnected. In a rapidly changing industrial landscape, it structurally analyzes complex problems and provides actionable solutions grounded in data and mathematical modeling. In an environment where AI, digital transformation, supply chain restructuring, and sustainability are all changing simultaneously, the ability to understand entire systems and design decision-making — beyond any single technology — is critical, and industrial engineering focuses on cultivating exactly this capacity.
The Department of Industrial Engineering at Yonsei University addresses operational and decision-making problems across manufacturing, logistics, services, energy, healthcare, and finance, organized around three areas: Operations and Management Science, Data Science, and Technology Management. Operations and Management Science applies mathematical optimization, simulation, data analysis, and AI to improve industrial operational processes and decision-making. Data Science combines domain knowledge with AI and optimization methods to support data-driven decisions and develop predictive models. Technology Management connects organizational strategy and execution through technology forecasting, technology and project evaluation, and user and market analysis, supporting sustainable growth.
Industrial engineering thus integrates data, models, technology, and management to solve complex problems across all industries. Students in the department develop the capacity to define and solve problems and create new value across diverse industrial sectors through this integrated approach.
